Exploring Corrosion And Its Consequences In Helical Gear Motors

Leading Distributor Of Gearmotors In Mississauga Ontario

Gear motors are known for their performance, durability and overall efficiency. One of the most popular gearmotors in this regard is helical gear motors. Offering excellent torque and variable speeds, they are highly versatile in operation, making them a staple in numerous applications. However, some gearmotors are prone to corrosion. This blog explores the phenomenon of corrosion and how it adversely impacts the performance of helical gear motors and their respective drives.

Effect Of Corrosion In Gear Motors

Corrosion, colloquially called rust, is a phenomenon when the metal surface of the gearmotor reacts with water, moisture or chemicals in its surroundings, consequently causing the surface to deteriorate and break down. This corrosive effect is further accelerated when the metal is exposed to salt water or chemicals containing chlorides.

Common effects of corrosion on helical gear motors include:

- Compromises Efficiency And Functionality Of Drive Systems: When the gearmotors and their constituent drive parts are exposed to salt water, moisture or harsh conditions, then their efficiency and functionality are adversely affected. This occurs due to increased friction caused by the corrosive layer, which in turn leads to poor performance of the gearmotor and can even result in complete failure in some cases.

- Compromise Reliability of Components: Due to substantial damage to gear motors and respective equipment, manufacturers are forced to provide unscheduled downtime and repairs. This increases the cost of maintenance of the helical gear motor and can even pose potential safety risks. The main reason behind this phenomenon is the damage to the surface caused by corrosion. This leads to compromising its structural integrity. As the gearmotors and drives face significant wear over time, they will see a marked drop in performance, thus necessitating the need for repair, maintenance or even outright replacement.

The next blog will address two prominent ways to eliminate or at least minimize the adverse effects of corrosion in gearmotors.
